Some of our favourite spots around New Zealand

We figured you’ll be picking up your Perch Camper from Christchurch, so let’s start with some nice places to visit in the South Island. These are some popular spots to visit, we’ll be adding to this soon with some smaller lesser known little gems. SOUTH ISLAND

christchurch

Ōtautahi Christchurch is NZ’s newest city, packed with modern architecture and a rejuvenated urban centre. Filled with boutique laneways, award winning resturants and a thriving café and coffee scene. Explore the city’s farmers markets for the finest fresh produce and artisan goods. Don’t forget the world-class art galleries and street art!

Akaroa

A short drive from Christchurch is the historical town of Akaroa. One of New Zealand’s first
European settlements with a rich Māori
and French history. Relax in the scenic seaside cafés, explore the boutique shops and colonial town. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous Banks Peninsula has some incredible walks or  swim with rare Hector’s dolphins.

hanmer springs

Beautiful Hanmer Springs is a resort town in the Canterbury region of New Zealand’s South Island. It’s known for Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa, with its mineral waters. The surrounding mountains are home to trails and seasonal ski slopes. A great place to take on a day walk, eat at some great restaurants, and relax in the thermal pools.

Kaikoura

Kaikoura on the east coast of the South Island, is well known for its abundant wildlife and its sperm whale population. The Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway winds from the town centre to lookout points at Point Kean. Close by, the rock platforms are home to a colony of New Zealand fur seals.

Abel Tasman

Abel Tasman National Park is a wilderness reserve at the north end of New Zealand’s South Island. It’s known for the Abel Tasman Coast Track, a long trail winding over beaches and across ridges. The headland at Separation Point is home to New Zealand fur seal colonies. Little blue penguins, bottlenose dolphins and seals.

Hokitika

Hokitika was founded on gold mining in 1864, it was a centre of the West Coast Gold Rush. When you think of the West Coast, you think untamed natural wilderness, genuine experiences and friendly characters that love to share a story. Hokitika is all that and more.

Franz Josef Glacier

Named after the Franz Josef Galcier, Franz Josef / Waiau is a small town in the West Coast region of the South Island. There’s a range of natural attractions in close proximity to Franz Josef Glacier Village. Lose yourself in the rainforests, waterfalls, and lakes.

wanaka

Wanaka, a resort town on New Zealand’s South Island, is set on the southern end of its namesake lake with views of snowcapped mountains. It’s the gateway to the Southern Alps’ Mount Aspiring National Park, a wilderness of glaciers, beech forests and alpine lakes.

Arrowtown

Arrowtown is a historic gold mining town in the Otago region of the South Island. Arrowtown is located on the banks of the Arrow River approximately 7.5 km from State Highway 6. There is also road access directly to Queenstown via the Shotover Gorge and a third route via the picturesque Lake Hayes.

Queenstown

Often refered to as “The adventure capital of the world”, Queenstown, sits on the shores of the South Island’s Lake Wakatipu, set against the dramatic Southern Alps. Renowned for adventure sports, it’s also a base for exploring the region’s vineyards and historic mining towns.

milford sound

Milford Sound is a fiord in the southwest of the South Island. It’s known for towering Mitre Peak, plus rainforests and waterfalls like Stirling and Bowen falls, which plummet down its sheer sides. The fiord is home to fur seal colonies, penguins and dolphins. Boat tours are a popular way to explore.

central otago

Central Otago is a large district incorporating the towns of Alexandra, Cromwell, Roxburgh, Clyde and Ranfurly. A powerful landscape, makes for dramatic seasonal photography,  Famous for it’s cycle trails, wineries,  autumn scenery and historic  goldfields,
