Mains Power

The van has a power cable so you can connect to a 230 volt AC power supply when at caravan parks. This connection will enable the use of ‘high power’ devices on board such as the electric jug. This connection will also charge the ‘house’ batteries if they are a little flat.

Solar and Battery Power

The van has two large solar panels (300W) which charge the 2 ‘house‘ batteries (220A/hr). If there is reasonable sun during the day this will provide sufficient power for the fridge, water pumps, fan, led lights and phone charging. We also have a mid size (800W) inverter on board which will provide some power for mid size devices such as laptops. The batteries also charge while driving so depending on your energy use you may be able to travel quite independently of mains power. If power gets low then a powered site at a caravan park will charge the batteries back to 100%

LED Lighting

Lots of LED lighting choices from bright lights for when preparing food, to LED strip lights for ambiance, and LED reading lights.

Fridge/Freezer compartment

This 50 litre unit has plenty of room for several days food as well as some drinks. There is a small freezer compartment so you can enjoy some kiwi ice cream or have some ice with your drinks.

Diesel Heater

The Eberspacher heater runs from the vehicle main fuel tank so it’s always ready to keep you warm on any cold evenings or nights. Operated through a digital control panel the unit is very safe and efficient to use.

Fresh Water

We don’t think its a good idea to fill up precious cupboard space with water tanks so there is a 70 litre fresh water tank installed under the floor. The water monitor will let you a check how much fresh water you have but the tanks should last approximately 7 days. A filler hose is onboard for when tanks need to be refilled.

Drinking Water

The built-in electric water pump and under bench water filter removes harmful Guardia and Cryptosporidium cysts, rust, sediment, algae and chemicals leaving beautiful fresh drinking water every time.

Side Awning

We have recently added a wind-out awning to provide shade in summer and also protection from a little drizzle or rain on those less-than-perfect days. The awning is 3m long and covers the side of the van with the sliding door. It takes just a few seconds to deploy and stow, and has legs which support the weight.

Wind Out Awning

We have recently added a wind-out awning to provide shade in summer and also protection from a little drizzle or rain on those less-than-perfect days. The awning is 3m long and covers the side of the van with the sliding door. It takes just a few seconds to deploy and stow, and has legs which support the weight.

Grey water

We have a 25 litre grey water tank installed under the floor. The tank monitor will show you the level built the tank will need to be emptied approximately every three days into an approved grey water drain. This water is primarily from washing dishes and although it is tempting to carefully sprinkle this  on the grass or around a tree, this is strongly discouraged. Aside from being illegal, if everyone did this it can spread bugs and encourage rodents.

Toilet

Toilets are the #1 item of controversy with freedom camping in New Zealand. For a vehicle to be certified as Self Contained one of the main requirements is that the toilet must be accessible even when the bed is made. There are many rental cars and vans in NZ where this is clearly not possible. This is breaking the rules and does not give you a good vanlife experience. We have a small toilet room which is accessible 24/7 for changing and/or toilet. Although its probably the least favourite job while camping, emptying the toilet at a dump station is a quick and easy task.

Cooker

We have chosen to use a cooker that is very popular on yachts which uses alcohol rather than LPG as the fuel source. The danger with LPG is when there is a problem it can result in a large fire and/or explosion. The Dometic Origo cooker avoids this problem as it uses alcohol which is safely stored in canisters which do not leak even when upside down. The cooker is easily moved so you can cook in the kitchen, outside the van, or down on the beach if that’s what you choose. It is important to refuel the cooker when it is cold.

Coffee

When you are on holiday you can take a few minutes to enjoy the simple things in life, we think that coffee is one of those things! We have selected the AeroPress machine for making the perfect brew. Experiment with the hand grinder for beans, different brew times and methods, and who knows perhaps you will be one of the 3000+ people competing in the World AeroPress Championships! www.worldaeropresschampionship.com

Bed

A good night sleep is important so we have a super comfy 13cm foam mattress which has a memory foam topper. The bed is 128cm wide and 197cm tall when made. As a comparison a standard double sized bed is 137cm wide and 187cm tall.

Fresh Air

We have a Maxxair roof vent to help provide fresh air that is required when living, cooking and sleeping in a small space. The vent which can be set to automatically start at a specified temperature can be fully open even during rain giving you peace of mind when you leave the van during the day. In summer the fan creates a lovely gently breeze. In winter it keeps the vehicle well ventilated so minimising any condensation.

Storage and Roofbox

We see a lot of campervans which are bursting at the seams with gear spread over every surface and space. We encourage you to bing as much as you need, but as little as possible. If you are like us then it’s nice to relax in a clean and tidy van so we have created as much storage as possible, as well as a large lockable roof box which can store those inevitable things you need to bring such as suitcases or packs.

Consumables

We provide a basic pantry including salt, pepper, sugar, tea, instant coffee, a small amount of milk and some cooking oil. Also onboard is toilet paper, toilet chemicals, dishwashing detergent & cleaning supplies. You will want to plan an initial food shop so we suggest you schedule your first stop at Countdown Supermarket which is very close to Christchurch airport.

Apple Carplay & Android Auto

We have upgraded the car stereo to a Sony unit which has Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Simply plug in your phone using a USB cable, and you will be able to view and control your phone apps from the stereo screen including maps for navigation and Spotify for music

Everything else

We include all the other things you will need to enjoy your trip. Plates, cups, cutlery, pots, pans, sheets, blankets, pillows…  see the full list at the top of the page under “inclusions”  and yes there is a kitchen sink!
If there’s something essential you think we have missed, let us know.

Insurance

Unfortunately, no matter how careful you are, accidents can happen to the vehicle you have hired, and you are responsible for this damage when you have a vehicle on hire. This includes some damage you can’t control such as someone hitting you while parked and not leaving contact information.

Camplify provides insurance for all vehicles – you should be familiar with this page www.camplify.co.nz/hirer-damage-cover as you will be required to pay an ‘excess’ if you have to make a claim.

We strongly encourage you to consider reducing your excess (www.camplify.co.nz/accident-excess) when making your booking. You are driving an unfamiliar vehicle on unfamiliar roads, so should the worse happen, a $500 excess will be a lot easier to swallow than the Risk Taker policy, which has a $3000 excess. This season we have had two guests use insurance claims from the first eight bookings.

24/7 Roadside Assistance

Don’t worry if you’ve struck a roadblock. Mighway have partnered with NZ Roadside Assistance www.nzra.co.nz to bring you premium roadside assistance. They will get you back on track in no time.
